We have a book club at work and, to be honest, I try hard not to buy books from it! I am lucky enough to own lots of lovely books already, and I am limited on storage space. Plus I like to support my local library. However, I was instantly drawn to this book by the New Covent Garden Food Co ‘A Soup for Every Day’.

I made homemade lentil soup for dinner tonight, served with homemade granary bread and Guernsey butter. I can’t for the life of me remember where this recipe came from, but it was so delicious I just had to share …

Now Autumn is well and truly here, it’s time for warming, hearty dinners. One of hubby’s favourites is chilli, not least because I tend to make a large batch and put at least half in the freezer. This recipe came from my mother-in-law and has been tweaked a little along the way. I hope you like it.

Inspired by my recent foodie podcast episode with Charles, and my visit to the South Show, hubby and I thought we’d have a go at making Guernsey Gache (pronounced ‘gosh’). Gache is a traditional Guernsey fruit loaf, usually served for afternoon tea, spread thickly with Guernsey butter. Our butter is easy to spot because it is bright yellow.

In this episode I am joined by a guest co-host – the lovely Charles. Most of this episode’s content has been driven by Charles, hence the title ‘Charles in Charge!’ (Before you ask, no, it isn’t an homage to the 80s American sitcom featuring Diagnosis Murder star, Scott Baio… although that is a thought for another episode…!) We chat about my recent creative exploits as well as Charles’s recent culinary exploits, as he is known for being quite a foodie. We’ll share recipes and cooking tips, as well as a food orientated Guernsey segment, with ‘a twist’. Bon appetit.

Every year, on, or around the time of his birthday, my husband asks me to bake his favourite chocolate brownies. The recipe I use us by Nigella Lawson and is available online here. It is quite literally the most calorific cake recipe I have ever come across (ingredients include 3 huge bars of chocolate, nearly 2 packets of butter, a small bag of sugar, 6 eggs and much more…!) But the end result, I have to admit, is epic. The brownies are so rich that you can only manage a tiny piece at a time, which is just as well really given the aforementioned calorie content! In the quest to make all of my Christmas presents, I have decided to have a go at making my own piccalilli. For those of you not familiar with this wonderful creation it is a mustardy pickle that goes beautifully with cheese and biscuits. Yum yum yum. It needs about 3 months to mature so I am a little late, but I figured I could write a ‘do not eat until 23 January 2011′ note on the jar!
I have chosen a Delia Smith recipe, which happily is available online so I have linked to it here.
In true, iMake style, thought it would be fun to document the making process.
So today I purchased 7 (yes, 7!) 1lb jam jars and wax discs. I have chopped up masses of cauliflower, runner beans, pickling onions and cucumber and have put them in bowls to soak in bring (just water and sea salt). I will leave these overnight and then Piccalilli Part 2 will begin in earnest tomorrow afternoon.
Here are by runner beans and cucumber…

Here are my onions and cauliflower…
