I don’t often do kids’ crafts, so I thought I’d have a go. I’ll be teaching kids to make this mask, as well as a bird mask (tutorial to follow) at a creative event to celebrate Guernsey’s Liberation Day. Any feedback on the tutorial would be gratefully received.
You will need:
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- 1 piece of A4 craft paper in yellow
- 1 piece of A4 craft paper in orange
- A paper plate
- A large lollypop stick
- Stapler
If you need a template for the ears, you can download one here.
This is what I did…
First, cut out the centre circle of the plate leaving just the rim. This might be too tricky for young children so they will need an adult’s help. Fold the 2 pieces of coloured A4 paper in half lengthways and draw a large ear shape on one side of the orange paper and a small one on the yellow paper. Ear templates here.
Cut out the ear shapes (you should have 2 of each as the paper is folded over) and glue the small ear shape to the larger one (twice). Glue the ears to the plate (on the inside).
Trim off the yellow and orange paper and cut both pieces along the fold. Then cut the orange and yellow paper into strips about 2cm wide.
Using the lollypop stick, curl a strip of paper. Then cut it down the middle, but not all the way (leave about 1/2cm at the bottom).
Glue the curly paper strip onto the plate (right by the edge of the face hole) and repeat using yellow and orange alternately.
Once this is done, staple the lollypop stick to the bottom of the mask (again an adult should do this). You can cover the staple with paper if you like.
