Bath Salts Tutorial

Bath salts tutorial

For this tutorial, I felt like going ‘old school’ and experimenting with making bath salts. I’ve opted for lavender as my ‘essential oil of choice’ because I love the smell and it has lots of wonderful healing properties.  You can, of course, use the basic salt recipe as a basis for bath salts with any fragrance.

You will need…

  • A mixing bowl and spoon
  • A jam jar (washed and dried thoroughly)  or other suitable container
  • Kitchen scales (optional)

Ingredients…

Basic salt recipe

  • One part epsom salts (available from the Chemist, also known as Magnesium Sulphate Heptahydrate)
  • 3 parts coarse sea salt

Fragrance

  • Lavender essential oil or any essential oil of your choice.

A note on quantities: I made approximately 500g of salts so I used around 375g coarse sea salt and 125g epsom salts.  You’ll need approximately 1ml of essential oil for each 100g of the finished product so I used 5ml.

I did this…

I measured out the salts in the jam jar, so I filled it 3/4 full with coarse sea salt and then topped it up with epsom salts.  You can, of course, use the weighing scales to get the ratio right.  Put the salts in your mixing bowl and carefully add your oil.

Stir the mixture, ensuring the addition of the oil has not created lumps in the salt, and spoon the mixture into the jam jar.

Leave to stand (with the lid on) for 24 hours so the fragrance will permeate the salts.

    Great instruction!
I am pretty sure this project went into my Q.. for future.

I like your new website, nice design and great feature of e-mail letting us know your update.

    • Thanks Yuka :-) Let me know how you get on. I am glad you like the site. I like the email notifications too, although I am trying to be careful not to update too regularly otherwise people are bombarded with emails :-)

Thanks for the feedback – much appreciated!

Lovely idea, and with so many of us trying to save money but still wanting to give nice gifts, very pertinent.

    Thank you for sharing generously

  • Thank you for such explicit instructions, I was wondering how long they last? Is it too early to make them for say Christmas?

    • Hi Sandra – no problem :-) I would probably make them nearer to Christmas so they are nice and fresh, but I am sure they would last if you made them now.
